Heavy rains that began on June 9 and only stopped at 3 am this morning 12th June have caused massive floods in Hpakant and Seng Tawng. Two bridges, a church, and a highway gate were damaged. Deadly floods happen every year in Hpakant due to destructive jade mining. Jade mining companies are throwing cement into the U Ru river, blocking the river flow. One local person said there is no action by authorities. When the local people blame the companies the authorities are protecting the companies. Most company owners are from other countries.
